The typical risks of your sector

  • Handling and receiving merchandise — pallets, boxes and receiving docks, every day
  • Working at height (stepladders, shelving) — the top shelf gets stocked at arm's length
  • Risk of violence and theft — working alone, cash on hand, unpredictable customers
  • Repetitive motions at the checkout — hundreds of scans and bags per shift
  • Cluttered circulation areas — full stockroom, narrow aisles, peak periods

Fine exposure

Not having a prevention program is an offence under s. 236 of the LSST — from $2,115 to $4,226 per statement of offence for a legal person (first offence, 2026). If the absence of measures contributes to compromising a worker's health or safety, s. 237 applies: from $21,127 to $84,519, and up to more than $400,000 for repeat offences.
